For those who might think that their leadership style is good, then I suggest you strive for great. If you believe your leadership style is great, then aim for optimal. If you reckon your leadership style is optimal, then let me be so bold as to say there is still room for improvement. Even Nelson Mandela or Obama would be quick to list their own leadership weaknesses (when out-of-office of course!)

1. Manage By Wandering Around (MBWA)

Managing By Wandering Around is an essential element of today's modern leadership style. MBWA doesn't literally just mean have a wander round, return to your corner office and tick the box. When we talk about wandering around, we're talking about a holistic approach to understanding your company from the employees angle. Through discussions with your lower-level employees, you're going to gain a far greater understanding of their perspective, their desires, their ideas and their value to the company.


By paying close attention to their work conditions, you're also going to be able to make better decisions concerning their welfare. Employee welfare is not the sole remit of the HR director or HR Manager. You are also responsible, and if you can incorporate this attitude of total responsibility into your leadership styles, your employees will respond positively.

2. Listen more than you talk.

This is an incredibly challenging idea for many senior managers and CEOs. Many believing that their high wage packet is to compensate them for their educated opinions on everything. Wrong. The high wages compensate for the increases responsibility. And a great way to fulfil that responsibility as a leader is to truly listen to your employees.

Now, I'm not the first person to recommend this style of leadership - Dale Carnegie was suggesting this attitude from way back in the early 20th Century. As time has gone on, managers have eventually warmed to the idea, and many modern management books seek to educate all on the true value of listening. It's to some, just an ideological and theoretical technique that doesn't work in the real world. These however, are just those who are their core, stubbornly refuse to change their ways. I appreciate that this 'listen more than talk' approach seems unintuitive at first, but think more and more about the benefits, and it'll quickly become a sensible norm.
