Improve Your Memory and Improve Your Life

Improve Your Memory and Improve Your Life

Do you want to improve your memory? It can be relatively easy to accomplish. We automatically expect our brains to solve a variety of functions at the same time. We expect our memory to kick in to gear and provide us with names, phone numbers, and a host of information at a split second's notice. There are times when our memory fails us, and we want to know why.

We have all experienced that embarrassing moment when you forgot someone's name that you had just recently met? When we experience these embarrassing moments we tend to blame it on a variety of reasons. How often have you blamed your failing memory on your age? However you'll be happy to know that age is not always the problem. There are a variety of reasons for a short memory failure.

Researchers have proven that the mind can continue to develop at any age. Similar to the muscles in your body, your mind must receive daily exercise. Despite your age or physical condition you can still begin to improve your memory.

So many times we blame ourselves for having a poor memory, when in fact the problem is that we just aren't paying attention. Our lives have become so complicated that we are constantly trying to multitask. So when we start to forget the simple things, like where we placed our keys or a particular document, we blame it on our failing memories. The truth is we are busy doing something else, or paying attention to something else when we placed down our keys or missed placed that document. We simply weren't paying attention in the first place.

Here is a simple memory technique you can use to remember someone's name when you're being introduced to them. During the introduction repeat the person's name, for example "it's very nice to meet you John" or "I have been looking forward to meeting you John". The few extra seconds it takes to prolong the introduction, and repeat the person's name, is usually all the time required to help retain this information.

Another great habit to get into is when you are shaking hands and repeating a person's name is to look into their eyes and try to remember their eye color. This simple practice will keep your mind engaged in the present moment.

Here is a quick little 10 second exercise you can do in the morning when you wake up. Shift your eyes quickly from left to right several times for approximately 10 seconds. Researchers believe that this will help connect the left and right hemispheres of your brain. Try brushing your teeth with your less dominant hand. When you feel comfortable with brushing your teeth, try shaving. This will really keep you focused and in the present moment.

Exercising your brain is easy, all you have to do is read something, do a crossword puzzle, get some exercise, learn to relax, and above all, pay attention.
