Do you want to experience increased energy, effortless breathing
, improved circulation and improved appearance? If you do, then it is important to improve your posture. In our day-to-day lives it seems that those with good posture seem to carry themselves with greater confidence. Maintaining good posture can also make you look taller and slimmer. So when your body is aligned, it can contribute to good health.
Why do I Need to Improve My Posture?
Your spine has four main curves-two forward curves in the neck and lower back, and two backward curves in the middle back and base of the spine. By maintaining balance in these curves good posture is achieved. The curves of your spine are important as they help your body move and absorb the force of impact as our feet hit the ground. If you have poor posture, there is a change in these curves, which increases the demands on your joints, ligaments and muscles in the spine.
With this, you will experience strain and discomfort, which cause us to move inefficiently-draining our energy. If this discomfort is left long enough, pain begins and can further diminish your energy. Additionally, it is important to note that your spine is home to your nervous system. So when you experience strain and discomfort from bad posture, your nervous system can also become distressed, which can decrease the brain's ability to send/receive information to/from the body through its only route-the spinal cord and nerves.
So, How do I Improve My Posture?
Posture is a habit that we all learned as children. So, like any habit, it takes time to modify-don't get discouraged. Initially, when you begin to improve your posture it may be uncomfortable because the muscles and ligaments have become accustom to being "lazy." Similar to any muscle, our postural muscles need to be properly trained in order to become stronger.
The easiest way to determine proper posture is by leaning against a wall with your heels, shoulders and back of your head touching the wall. You can also look straight ahead, shrug your shoulders up and circle them backwards as far as possible then drop them down. This will help you to achieve perfect posture if performed every day.
Watch out for Your Spine
Once proper posture is achieved, it is also important to continue to maintain it and further protect your spine. Be sure to avoid carrying heavy bags/purses on one shoulder, putting a wallet in your back pocket, cradling your phone between your ear and shoulder, or falling asleep on the armrest of the couch. If you are experiencing pain, don't ignore it! When pain is experienced, it is a sign that something is wrong-visit your chiropractor for necessary treatment.
