Improving Brain Function Is a Matter of Fats
I don't know a thing about you but if you're getting older, you might notice your brain isn't as sharp as it once was. Turns out, scientists have discovered brains slow down as they age. Luckily, improving brain function can be as simple as improving your nutrition levels.
Do you know your brain is mostly fat? It's at least 60% fat! But that doesn't give you carte blanche to eat fatty foods. The truth is, your brain needs specific fats.
These specific fats are building blocks of your brain. They keep your synapses firing on all cylinders because they're contributing nutrients that keep your brain working. But could you be deficient in these fats?
The Right Nutrition Can Reduce These Symptoms
--Forgetfulness, how often have you misplaced your keys or forgotten the name of an old friend you just ran into? How about walk into the room and have no idea why you're there?
--Slower response-do you feel like thoughts and ideas come to you at a slower pace than they used to?
--Feeling "blue" or a little down-if you're feeling "not yourself", your brain chemistry may be a little off.
You can reduce these symptoms by improving your brain function.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids Are Key
The truth is, scientists at UCLA, Johns Hopkins and other universities have made some important discoveries. They've found that your brain really does get slower as you age! It's not just your imagination.
They've also discovered your brain produces fewer neurotransmitters or "message centers" in your brain. And the wires that connect these neurotransmitters--your nerves-- get damaged over time.
The good news is, they've also learned your brain needs plenty of omega 3 fatty acids. These nutrients will counteract the natural aging process.
A study at the University of California found participants who got enough omega 3's actually slowed down their DNA. That reflects in their appearance and their brain functions.
Hmm...so improving brain function connects to nutrition? Yes! And you can get more of these nutrients by eating more walnuts, olive oil and avocadoes. Eat fish 2-3 times a week. Fish is the best resource for DHA, one of the main brain fats.
Getting enough DHA is essential toimproving brain function. It soothes your nerves (literally!) and can help your memory. It has side benefits of boosting your mood and reducing inflammation throughout your body too.
