The first time to receive the Holy Eucharist is incomparable to other events that happened in the lives of most Catholics. Either you take the event calmly or you can be as excited as the Saints that they felt that receiving the body and blood of Jesus Christ is the ultimate source of bliss; that they can immediately die right after receiving the body of Jesus Christ. Some Saints died on the spot; one of which is Blessed Imelda who died right after she received the Holy Communion from the hands of Jesus Christ.

To help children prepare for the Holy Communion; parents and catechists would prepare the children lessons about the value and importance of the Holy Eucharist. Once they are able to understand the true meaning and essence of the Holy Communion; it is time to make physical preparations. Physical preparations would mean that First Communion dresses should be ready for the event. Traditionally, communion dresses are white to symbolize the purity of the hearts of the first Communicants.

As part of the preparation for the First Holy Communion, the children would need to spend hours of practice to familiarize them on how to go about the entire ceremony. They would need to practice the responses and prayers for this once in a lifetime event in the lives of these children. The Catechists should be able to explain very well the profound meaning on how the body and blood of Jesus Christ is transformed into bread and wine. That is why it is necessary that the child should be at least seven years of age because in this stage the child would be able to comprehend the religious teachings about the importance of Holy Eucharist.

More than the physical preparation, it is very important that the hearts and mind of the first communicants are prepared as well. Receiving the body of Christ comes with a responsibility that Catholics should be able to attend the church service every Sunday.
