Basics of In the Night Garden...Episodes

In the Night Garden... (yes, the ellipsis is generally a part of the name) is a children's Television program that is designed for very small children in the age range of one to four years old. It was produced to be part of the BBC's Children's Tv Series, and is created by Andrew Davenport and Ann Wood with Ragdoll Productions. Filmed in live motion for the most part and featuring a mixture of costumed actors (who involve Holly Denoon, Rebecca Hyland, Nick Kellington, Andy Wareham, Elisa Laghi, Justyn Towler, and Isaac Blake), puppetry, and computer animation, it is narrated by famed British Shakespearean actor Derek Jacobi. A lot of In The Night Garden toy items and goods has been designed based on the Television series.

In the Night Garden... was designed to both entertain and unwind its particularly young viewing target audience. Ann Wood says of it, "We wanted to discover the difference in between being asleep and being awake from a kid's point of view: the difference between closing your eyes and pretending to be asleep and closing your eyes and sleeping." She goes on to say "We became very conscious of the anxiety surrounding the care of young kids which manifested itself in all form of directions - but the one big subject that came up again and yet again was bedtime. It can be the classic time for tension in between children who want to stay up and mums and dads who want them to go to bed...so this is a programme about calming things down whereas most kid's Television is about gee-ing every thing up!"

In the Night Garden...is populated by unusual and wondrous characters with unusual names. They are living in a place comprising sparsely wooded grassland, very big daisies, and balls of colourful, bright flowers. Every single episode of the program begins with some different child asleep in bed as the voice of Jacobi introduces the episode. Next, the scene cuts to the blue character with the red mohikan named Igglepiggle (performed by Kellington) who, in his boat, wends his way to the Night Garden. Each and every episode culminates with one character to generally be told a bedtime story. This story is engendered by the "Magic Roundabout" gazebo which has been erected at the heart of the Night Garden. The bedtime story is a summary of the plot of that specific episode. The characters might sing and dance with each other in or round the gazebo. Igglepiggle, however, never goes to rest, and his goodbye sequence closing out the program always goes "Igglepiggle's not in bed!" "[Squeak]" "Do not worry, Igglepiggle, it is time to go." Then the Night Garden flows upward into the night sky and at very last Igglepiggle is seen to be sleeping on his small boat, his always present red blanket doubling as the boat's sail, whilst the credits scroll.

In the Night Garden...was announced in October 2005, with 20 episodes being broadcast in March of 2007. Two series totaling one hundred episodes were developed, with the last 1 airing on March 9th, 2009. In 2010 the BBC announced that it would "not be commissioning another series".

Today, In the Night Garden lives on in DVD recordings of the original TV shows. It also lives on in a line of extremely well-known In The Night Garden toys for kids.
