In With The Old And Out With The New
Modern technology can be a real burden, yes we say we cant live without it but the energy we waste cursing them when they go wrong and the money we spend fixing them or buying new ones
, is it really worth all that heartache?
Well, yes is the simple answer because the white goods of this world are one of the things that symbolise our developed status in the global grand scheme of things and they do this by safely storing food, sterilising plates and kitchen utensils and by washing and drying our clothes and all this at the touch of a button or the turn of a dial or a turning on of a plug socket. When you think about it, its quite amazing really and perhaps we should spend a little time cursing a bit more time thanking the powers that be that weve got access to all this stuff.
The other thing to try and keep in mind when it comes to white goods is that they are part of what the marketing industry term as fast moving consumer goods and as such, theyre built for purpose but dont tend to be built to last. This is an unfortunate and sometimes expensive side effect of our huge and rapid technological advancements we just cant stop developing and improving and inventing which means that no sooner have you done your in depth market research than the next model is already being promoted and your shiny new fridge freezer is no longer the latest gadget.
As a consumer its therefore important that you dont get hung up on always having the latest and the newest because thats an expensive tail to be chasing and youll need a very good recycling plan up your sleeve too or youll be creating a landfill all of your very own and you wont be at all popular in the green bubble we find ourselves in.
Having said that, its also important to realise that white goods are a bit like cars in that they lose their value as soon as they leave the showroom and they continue to decrease in value the longer you have them, they also tend to become less efficient over time in terms of the job they do and the energy they consume. We should have our fridge freezers and washing machines serviced regularly but unless this is part of the plan weve agreed with Bosch, Zanussi or any of the other major manufacturers, chances are well just leave them to get on with it until they eventually pack in. Thats why its worth considering a plan to trade in our old white goods every five to ten years and recycle the old ones, that way well get the best of them, well be as energy efficient as we possibly can be and itll force the government to really tackle recycling in a big way.
