Incorporating Real Wood Furniture Into Your Interior Design

Firstly, you should always (and we mean always) ensure that the real wood furniture you are installing suits the shade and tone of the room

. There are an awful lot of different home accessories available that can be modified, painted, stripped and all the rest. However, high quality furniture is definitely not one of them. Whilst its possible to stain the wood slightly, this will often lead to it losing its real wood look which is most of the time what youre paying for! As one of the most expensive items you are going to be buying, you should be designing rooms around them.

Its also a really good idea to remember that real wood furniture can vary massively. Just as guitars can be made from a hell of a lot of different timbers, so can genuine sofas, tables, cupboards and the like. Fortunately, this means that youll be able to create different feels within the room, which is only scope for your creativity. Old fashioned and more traditional rooms work really well with darker woods such as mahogany and ebony, for instance (though be careful, or you might end up looking like you are trying to create a room for Matildas evil headteacher). Alternatively, brighter woods like spruce or beech can create quite a happy, light-hearted atmosphere. Avoid using stripy rugs alongside bright woods, mind you, or it might look like youre creating a hippy drug den.

Thirdly (and this is one of the key design commandments), never import an item of furniture that doesnt fit the aesthetics of a room, even if it is lovely. Picture the scene: wondering through an old fashioned second hand shop. In the corner (underneath a layer of dust, naturally) lies an old writing desk, complete with ink well and scratches. As someone whos been writing since you were young, its literally inspirational. You find yourself picturing completing your masterpiece at it: you MUST have it. Then you get it home, and realise that in your modern, tasteful flat, it just looks mouldy. Think of where the furnitures going, or youll end up making a rather expensive mistake.

Finally and this goes for virtually every type of trade apart from plumbers and heart surgeons always shop around for a great price. One of the main advantages of real wood furniture is that its real. If it looks good, it looks good, whether its bought from a charity shop or custom built by a carpenter who also looks after William and Kate. As long as its been taken care of (and you will be able to see if it has or not), then secondhand genuine timber is an absolute steal.
