Increase In Males Opting For Surgery

The media are regularly blamed for filling readers minds with idealistic images of the perfect body

. Unattainable to most, the publishing of pictures of super slim celebrities has created a society where there is pressure to conform to the one body type, being presented as the norm.

Hundreds and thousands of women in the UK have succumbed to cosmetic surgery, in an attempt to be the image of perfection. However, new figures show that men too are feeling the heat, with some going to extreme lengths to conform to the icon of the metrosexual male.

Surgeons have reported a steady increase in the number of men choosing to have male breast reduction surgery, a solution to a condition known as Gynaecomastia.

Gynaecomastia particularly affects young males and is where firm, tender breast tissue grows under the nipple. It is usually caused by an imbalance of hormones during puberty and it typically disappears without treatment after a couple of years.

However, 40 to 60 per cent of men now suffer from Man Boobs and the procedure is now the second fastest growing procedure for men. The surgery is known to boost self-esteem and confidence as the procedure leaves the chest with a more firm and flat appearance.

So how do they do it? The procedure is much like liposuction. An incision is made around the nipple, which allows access to the tissue, which is enlarged. The surgery itself takes between one and three hours to complete and in most cases patients can go home that same day.

The recovery period takes around six weeks. It is usually recommend that patients return to work after three weeks and begin exercise after six. Male breast reduction surgery should not be used as a quick fix. Surgery is sometimes discouraged for overweight or obese men who have not tried using exercise or weight loss to battle the problem first.
