Scabies is an infectious skin condition and is caused due to the parasites called "Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis", hidden beneath the surface of the skin. These parasites, referred to as mites, can often transfer from one human host to another by coming in direct or indirect contact. However a majority of medical reports suggest that these mites are rarely infested through indirect contact.

In the past few decades, scientists have researched several different studies to determine the exact cause of the occurrence of scabies. The results have revealed that the increased incidents of scabies in patients with mental disorders are mainly due to poor environmental factors. It is essential to maintain proper hygiene in nursing homes, mental institutions, orphanages and schools.
