Incredible video recorded via iPhone by father and son of the Geissbuhlers
After days away from internet, there seems to be more interesting things waiting for me. On my suggested/ top news, I found a really interesting video. It shows a father and his son from Brooklyn, New York sent an iPhone into the stratosphere a few weeks ago to record a video of the earth's curvature.
The father said that they firstly found materials to make the craft, and then added a weather balloon and a Styrofoam case for the iPhone. And then after a long time testing and researching, they launched the homemade craft and successfully recorded something down in Newburgh, NY. The father said that they spent about eight months researching and testing their homemade craft.
The video did not contain the entire recording. It lasts no more than 7 minutes. However, the video is really interesting. You will be surprised by the simple device, and the unbelievable image.
The father firstly introduces the mission and preparation of the action. And he also introduces us the protection for the iPhone. And after the countdown (by the son in red), all we can see is the shaking image and the dim ground.
Firstly, because of the foam collars, the craft does not spin, but rocks wildly from the turbulence of a large, light object. The craft is climbing at the speed of 25 ft every second.
In the 2 minute, the craft disappears into the low clouds 3000ft above the ground. And the image shows for a 10 minute white out.
12 minutes later, the craft and the iPhone are at about 20,000 ft. And about 24 minutes later, it is at 30,000ft. The craft keeps a rising speed at 17 mph, and a strange electronic rhythm is audible on the track. The phone tries to transmit a GPS coordinate, creating some interference as well.
40 mins and 60,000ft, the craft experience winds as high as 100mph, flipping it head over fields. 60 mins and 90,000ft, the balloon escapes the thermal winds and is now 18ft across, one foot short of its burst diameter.
After 70mins and 100,000 ft, nearly 19 miles high, the balloon reaches its breaking point. There's only a brief moment of weightlessness as the craft stops climbing and begins to fall. Reaching maximum speed at approximately 150 mph, even with the parachute deployed. Slowing to 15 mph, the GPS transmits its coordinates for the first time.
Amazingly, the soft capsule lands only 30 miles north of the launch site due to a quick ascent and two differing wind patterns. The camera batteries finally succumb to the coldness after 100 mins of recording, and stops working 2 mins from landing. The craft is finally found 50 ft high in a tree caught by its parachute. And its external LED light is shining as a beacon when the father and son found it in the dead of night.
The phone apparently braved winds of 100 miles-per-hour and temperatures as cold as 60 below zero. However, considering that the iPhone was smartly packed with hand warmers, it did work. And after queried by many Netizens, We found that the video was loaded via a high-definition video camera which was loaded into the carrier.
The whole thing is near the end until now. However, we can not ignore the stir sparked among the Netizens, neither the persistence, practical ability, the innovation spirit, and the happiness of being together with the family.
The Geissbuhlers' can take 8 months time to search and test for their homemade craft. We can also take our time to do things we like. The final result is not the most important. It is what we feel in the process that leads our action.
