Independent Living – My First Few Weeks
In many ways, life really does come round a full circle
. We are born completely dependent on our parents and elders for everything from food, comfort and security, right to our health and hygiene as well. As we grow older, we start to become more self sufficient and develop our own identity. Once old age starts to creep up, our levels of dependence increase and we are again looking to someone to be able to tend to our needs and care.
When I reached my new home', I was full of mixed feelings. My first thought was wonder, what had I done to deserve this. I really did not know how I would fit in, how people would accept me, or if I could accept the place.
When I reached the home it did not seem quite as bad as I thought. Maybe this was the face they wanted to show the world, the cynic in me prodded. Almost immediately I felt a sense of strange relief. In my new world, I was not alone. The home was filled with others just like me, though everyone had their own story. This was a place where I could drop my guard, be with others who had the same troubles and hope. I was flooded with a strong reassurance.
I slowly started to blend in. I got hold of the system, and how things worked around me. It was fairly easy, and I could lead my slow life with nothing to fray my nerves. All my medication came to me on time, and my meals were tailored to suit my dietary requirements. Everything seemed to be going well. And I did have my family come visit me too.
A short while into my stay, the repetitive days started to wear me out. I was exhausted with sheer boredom. This was when I sought refuge in the sanctuary of the recreation room. A heaven where I had access to my piano, a television and even some board games, this is where I continue to spend my time with my new family. I was thrilled that my years as a practicing counsellor have not gone to waste. I offer succour to many friends, and even their families who have their challenges to meet. This gave me a strange sense of empowerment.
I was filled with apprehension at the thought of being moved away from my loved ones and being pushed into a world on my own. I have learnt to view this as a miracle in disguise as I have found a new lease of life. Here is a place where I am no longer dependent; I have my own life, and my own limited choices to make. I feel a sense of relief, satisfaction and renewed respect. I am grateful that I have a chance to spend my later years living my life with dignity, and I hope it stays that way.
