India in Autumn

Off-season tourism is not only a good idea in terms of economics

, but can also give the savvy traveler a chance to experience exotic locales without having to deal with the roar of the crowd and the smell of exhaust fumes. India is the perfect destination for the budget-minded tourist in search of an off-season adventure. Why not visit India's grand historical settings and experience its natural beauty in the fall when the leaves are turning and the tourist hordes have left?

The Kashmir valley region is just one of many perfect Indian destinations in autumn. In between the rainy season and winter, the area explodes with autumn hues and is a great time for the off-season traveler to visit this timeless and beautiful area. There are reasonably priced accommodations in almost every town and Srinigar (near the city of Kashmir) is famed for its houseboats (shikaras) which offer the tourist a picturesque and unique lodging place.

Fall is the perfect time for those who are interested in the wildlife of India (and no, I'm not talking about Mumbai after dark - that's another story...). Wildlife preserves and parks are generally open during the fall, and Bandipur National Park is a wonderful place to see the natural beauty and the amazing variety of fauna and flora that India plays host to. From elephants to birds - Bandipur has it all.

Another choice autumn destination in India is Periyar National Park in Kerala. Elephants, tigers, and the barking deer are just a few of the species that make their home in Periyar. Or, if you would like to see the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, you might consider a visit to Madhya Pradesh and the Bandhavgarh National Park in central India. If you'd like to see a tiger in the wild, this is the best place in India and perhaps the world to make it happen.

Of course, your loved ones back home will be wanting to know how you are making out in the jungle, so don't bungle by letting their phone bills mount - you can make cheap calls to India if you shop around a little. There are a host of telecom services who can make it simple, cheap and easy for anyone to call India, anytime of the year. So dust off the safari hat, and hitch up your jodhpurs - India beckons!
