Indian Carmakers Reign The Domestic Car Market
Although there are car companies from across the world which are launching their
new products in the burgeoning Indian car market but still the Indian domestic car market is ruled by the Indian carmakers. The three Indian carmakers, Maruti, Tata and Mahindra hold around 67 per cent of the passenger car market in the country. During the August month, the Indian car industry registered a sales of 160,794 units and the industry grew 33 per cent. The Indian government has also claimed that the Indian car industry has become the seventh largest car manufacturer in the world.
The top 10 selling cars across segments include five Maruti models and three Tata models. Also the
Mahindra Scorpio and Mahindra Bolero are doing very well in the SUV segment. But these models of Mahindra have yet to reach to the top 10 list. Maruti Alto sold 28,430 units in the month of August and was able to maintain its number one spot followed by Wagon R. The other models of Maruti like Maruti Swift sold 11,508 units, Maruti Dzire 8431 and Maruti Omni sold 7,855 units. Maruti was able to bag top three positions which in total accounts for around 45 per cent of the total Indian passenger car market.
Then it is Tata Motors after Maruti which has registered good sales in the Indian car market. Tata Motors is the number two carmaker of the country. The wonder model of Tata Motors, Tata Nano sold 8,103 units to become the top selling model of the company. Tata Motors other models like Tata Indica sold 7,531 units and Tata Indigo sold 6,678 units to be in the top 10 list. Even Mahindra and Mahindra created a lot of buzz in the Indian auto market because of its deal with Ssangyong Motors, the South Korean SUV maker. M&M expects to strengthen its SUV segment with this deal which comprises of models like Scorpio and Bolero which were the top selling models of the company during August. The top five carmakers in the country, percentage wise include Maruti (with 45 per cent of the total market), Tata Motors (with 14.84 per cent), Hyundai (with 14 per cent), Mahindra and Mahindra (with 6.68 per cent) and Ford (with 3.88 per cent).
