Indian Marriages: All About Following The Traditions
Values and traditions are a matter of esteem in India
. No matter how ancient is the custom or how small is the occasion, if values and ethics are related, it is important. Same is in the case of marriages as well.
Indian marriages are full of rituals and beliefs. It is considered as a propitious event demanding a lot of attention and efforts. Numerous customs are usually followed in the Indian marriages for maintaining the significance of the subject.
India is a multicultural country and in every culture, marriages are organized in a different manner. A Hindu Shaadi is completely different from a Muslim Nikah. Same is with Christians as well as Sikhs. Although every religion follow a different custom, one thing is common in all of them. That is following the culture.
Lets just pick up two religions and try to compare some of the customs of both Indian marriages.
Kundli Matching
Hindu- Kundli matching is a custom holding a special importance in any
Hindu Marriage. It is also known as Janam Patri. This is basically a document created on the birth of child which tells the planetary location as well as calculations of that particular time. It is said that the Kundli of anyone can tell everything about the past, present and future of the person. It can depict the nature of the person as well.
Muslim- None of such practices is involved in Muslim Marriages.
Mehendi Ceremony
Hindu- This is yet another auspicious custom of Hindu Wedding. Mehendi is basically a name of a plant. The leaves are used to make a green paste and then it is applied on the hands as well as on the toes of the bride by making beautiful designs. Once the paste gets dried, the color transforms into bright red. Mehendi is a symbol of love and affection towards the husband.
Muslim- Mehendi is used remarkably in Muslim weddings as well. The only difference is that they call it Henna instead of Mehendi.
Role of Priest
Hindu- The role of priest is highly essential in
Indian marriages. So it is in the case of Hindu Marriages as well. The difference is just in name. Hindus call them Pujari or Pundit. It is the Pundit who chants all the wedding prayers or Mantras. These mantras are basically picked from several mythological and holy books of Hindus. Without the Pundit a traditional Hindu wedding is not possible.
Muslim- Role of priest is equally important in Muslim Nikah as well. These priests are known as Kazi. The Kazi hymns various versus taken from the holy books of Muslims.
As per this comparison, it is clear that no matter how distinct are the Indian religions, the marriages comprises some of the common factors known by different names.
Hence it can be said that Indian marriages are all about following the ethics and cultures. No matter what the religion of the person is, the common objective of everyone is following the rituals. It is the root of every Indian Marriage.
