Indianapolis Colts - Expanding Depth For 2010

The Colts may not have gotten the early picks in the Draft of 2010

, but they certainly made the most of what they got. Most people would readily acknowledge that there was little that the Colts could do to improve the core of their team. They are pretty solid at almost every position. As a result, the team focused almost exclusively on increasing their depth, which may make for some serious improvements in the Indianapolis Special Teams play for the upcoming season.

Defensive additions rule the day

The early focus of the Colts in this year's Draft was on defense. TCU's outstanding defensive end, Jerry Hughes, was a bit of a first-round surprise, but he is undoubtedly a good selection for the team. The big question now is what the Colts intend to do with him. By NFL standards, Hughes is a bit small to be used as an end, so the team may in fact attempt to convert him into something closer to a linebacker. His speed on the field would make that a perfect option.

With a name like that

And then there is the Colts' other top selection: Iowa's Pat Angerer. With a name like that, it is no wonder he was one of the most dangerous linebackers in the Big Ten over the last few seasons. Like Hughes, Angerer is perceived to be small for his position, but that hasn't prevented him from beating expectations in the past. As a special teams' player in 2010, you can expect him to make the kind of impact that warrants at least some playing time on the defensive side of the ball.

The Colts' increased depth not only provides a cushion for unexpected injuries, but also increases the team's overall speed. For a team that had the best record in the NFL in 2010 while competing for another Super Bowl crown, even the smallest increase in talent could spell trouble for the rest of the League.
