Indians Prefer The Vw Bug To The Italian 500

It seems that the Indian car buyers love the original German peoples car more than they love the original Italian peoples car

. Wondering what cars we are refereeing to? We are talking about two iconic cars one from Germany and the other from Italy. Both the cars were once manufactured as means of transport for the masses but today they are modified and sold at premium prices that could put several luxury sedans to shame.

The cars being talked about here are Volkswagen Beetle and Fiat 500. Volkswagen Beetle was produced during Hitlers time and become an iconic German car popularly called the Bug. It met instant success in that period, which is being carried forward even today. The Volkswagen group launched this car in India as a part of brand building exercise last year. To everyones surprise the car found a lot of buyers despite its steep price of Rs 20,45,000 (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The car is imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and thus the price is so steep. But the car has managed to sell about 284 units since its launch.

However, Fiat500 has not been able to receive a similar response despite being cheaper than the Bug. The Fat 500 has been around (not in India but the world) since 1957 and was the Italian peoples car. But today, at a price tag of Rs 14,82,500 (ex-showroom, New Delhi) the car is defiantly not meant for the hoi polloi. The Fiat500 is a three door model and runs on the same engine as the Fiat Punto. The car is cute to look at and is imported from Turin as a CBU. But Fiat has only managed to sell about 68 units of the car so far in the country. Even though the car is only meant to strengthen Fiats brand image, the number is pretty low if one compares it to what the more expensive counterpart Volkswagen Beetle has managed to achieve.

Volkswagen and Fiat are also competing in the premium hatchback segment with their newly launched cars Fiat Punto and Volkswagen Polo. It seems the competition is going to be as iconic as the car makers themselves!

Many top luxury brands are seen competing agaiunst each other these days and it is noticed that the customer benefits from that. With two auto majors Fiat and Volkswagen competing in the premium hatchback segment there is a lot in store for the Indian customers.
