50 years of scientific growth for hearing aids
, along with the resulting major steps up in personal relief, have been strongly exhibited in a hearing aid expert's collection. For this specialist, hearing aids have become both his business and his hobby. The hearing aids he was selling in 1941 when he started his own business are now relics of the past, and they look like dinosaurs compared to the modern hearing aids.
Out of the 30 instruments he has collected from different periods of time, two in particular tell a story. He shows a tiny, shirt button shaped object beside a huge and ungainly pair of the old fashioned bell type dry cell batteries. He then goes on to explain that the smaller battery is better and more efficient than the older, bigger batteries. With the onset of the early 1920s, battery size was cut down so much that women were typically able to transport them in a leather holder, beneath their dress skirts and hook them onto their corsets. Men either put them in belts or in the pockets of their pants. The part of the hearing aid that provides the sound (the transmitter) was usually hidden beneath the clothing, being attached to the battery by an extremely uncomfortable cord.
Recently, these giant contraptions have been chiseled down to small, comfortable devices that clip onto the ear and you are on your way. There are even models that are designed to attach to the patient's glasses. Those were referred to as carbon diaphragm tools. 1938 ushered in the introduction of the vacuum tube circuit, then transistor circuits were invented later on in 1965; these allowed companies to eliminate bulk extensively and offer larger, more economic batteries that suited clothes more.
Throughout the entire history of hearing aids, the last several years have provided the most profound scientific advancements. There are no more annoying cords to fuss with, nor is the unit heavy anymore, and the tiny batteries last for over a week at a time. As long as there have been hearing problems, there have been people who use hearing aids; in the 19th Century people would use the giant horn that you see on cartoons, with the bell being aimed at the speaker and the smaller end intended to go in the hearing impaired person's ear.
In the era of women wearing their hair in a bun covering their ears, one egotistical matriarch invented quite a brilliant device. She hid her little celluloid trumpet with some pieces of her own hair and then put it on as a bun which gained popularity. There are a couple of other designs, with one being a tortoise shell lorgnette/trumpet design, and another being a cup made of mother of pearl. Men have always been more hesitant when it comes to using hearing aids, maybe because they were vain or because they were more conspicuous.
It was at the time of his retirement, that this hearing expert decided that he should find a new hobby that could occupy his time, when he decided that hearing aids were interesting. When he decided he wanted to do something different with his life, he had been working as a horticulturalist for 15 years. He made the decision to open his own business. He found that obtaining employment at 40 was quite challenging, and he wanted to provide assistance to other individuals. He learned about hearing aids in New York offices. It's easy to take for granted the ability to hear, and hard to know what effect it has on our relationships. Mental and emotional issues can result from deafness, which in time will severely impact not only the general attitude of the individual, but also their overall health.
