CO2 Incubators are one of the most widely used laboratory equipments that find their

application in cell and tissue culture experiments and molecular biology, pharmacology and immunology studies etc. They are available as either air-jacketed units or as water jacketed units, designed to provide highly accurate conditions of temperature, humidity and CO2 levels within the equipment. The Water Jacketed Co2 Incubators use water as a coolant and are better equipped to resist temperature fluctuations as compared to air jacketed incubators. They have a large thermal mass that prevents them from losing heat due to frequent opening and closing of the incubator door, making them ideal for use for temperature sensitive applications.

The water jacketed CO2 Incubators use PID microprocessor based controllers for temperature and a digital display for ease of monitoring. These equipments are essentially double walled units with a heated water jacket that provides exceptional temperature uniformity within the range of +/- 0.2C. They feature a tempered glass inner door and a heated outer door that helps prevent the formation of cold spots, therefore minimizing any condensation on the walls and preventing any chances of contamination. However, since water within the water jacket can be easily contaminated over time, it is important to use sterilized water only within the chamber walls to prevent any microbial growth. The water jacketed CO2 Incubators feature smooth, seamless interior surfaces that resists any microbial growth and prevents the accumulation of dirt and contaminants on the wall, thereby eliminating any chances of contamination to the incubated samples. Moreover, they are also provided with autoclavable door gaskets that further minimize the entry of contaminants within the chamber.

The water jacketed CO2 Incubators come equipped with stainless steel shelves for segregation of the sample specimens. The standard models may come with six or more shelves, but additional shelves are also provided on request. They come equipped with temperature and CO2 gas control systems, providing a highly controlled and sterile environment for in vitro studies. The unit may feature thermal conductivity sensors or infrared sensors with microprocessor based controllers for maintaining the CO2 levels within the chamber. The thermal conductivity sensors sense the temperature differences within the equipment resulting due to any fluctuations in CO2 levels, therefore providing an indirect method of CO2 monitoring, whereas the infrared sensors provide a more direct measurement system for CO2 concentration. Since they remain unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, the infrared sensors are more commonly employed for applications necessitating frequent monitoring and opening and closing of the incubator door. Moreover, since drying and desiccation of cells and tissues is a commonly encountered problem in such temperature sensitive applications, the water jacketed CO2 Incubators are also equipped with an active humidification system that helps in maintaining the humidity levels up to 95%, therefore ensuring optimum growth conditions for cell and tissue culture experiments.

The water jacketed CO2 Incubators also come equipped with an active HEPA filtration system that helps in maintaining clean air circulation within the working area. Most of the models also come equipped with an independent over temperature protection feature that prevents the working temperatures from exceeding beyond the desired set levels. The more sophisticated models may also come equipped with a high heat, decontamination feature, designed to carry out a dry, high heat decontamination cycle without removing the infrared sensors. These equipments are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations and can also be custom-designed to fit into tight spaces.
