Strainers used in industrial operation come in different form and each one has defined set of properties
. Before buying strainer for your industrial operation it is very essential to understand the functioning, material used in manufacturing and capability of a particular strainer type.
Deployed across various industries such as Refineries, Petrochemical plants, strainers are used to remove hazardous elements that might cause partial or complete breakdown of operations if they get into the system.
The type of material used to manufacture strainers depends upon their use, for example at times perforated stainless steel sheet or wire mesh is used and sometimes forged iron of different grades is used to build these products.
Types of strainers
Basically there are five broad categories of strainers widely availableConical, Y type, Tee type, Basket and Fabricated strainers.
Conical Strainers These are usually made up of various grades of cast steel. Many times these are also referred to as Suction strainers because they are installed on the suction side. There is low pressure drop in these types of strainers which makes them popular as temporary strainers.
Tee Strainers - These types of strainers are critical components of a pipeline system, usually deployed to protect valves and pipeline in general from materials like grit, debris etc. Designed in shape of flanged T, the strainers are highly effective and efficient in sifting the foreign materials.
Y Strainers Made of perforated stainless steel, Y type strainers are permanent strainers deployed to filter unwanted elements from liquid, steam or gaseous materials. This category of strainers can be easily used over large filtration area either in horizontal or vertical position. They are easy to install and maintain.
Basket Strainers There are two types of Basket strainers Simplex and Duplex. Duplex Basket Strainers are compounded simplex basket strainers. Six simplex strainers when connected with a pair of four way ball valve give rise to Duplex Basket Strainers.
These types of strainers are installed in the pipeline systems where flow cannot be stopped. Depending upon their NB size they are capable of filtration up to 40 microns. Basket Strainers find use in industries where impurities are mostly solids. Unlike other types of strainers, it is easy to conduct maintenance on these strainers.
Other classification of strainers is -Temporary Strainers and Fabricated Strainers.
Temporary Strainers As the name suggests these are installed for short period of time. Usually used to perform filtration at the beginning of the process or when anti-clogging exercise is undertaken. Manufactured as perforated flanges they fit between two pipes easily.
Fabricated Strainers Manufactured especially for a given piping system, such strainers can endure extreme temperature and pressure variations. They are usually applied in existing piping systems in industries like oil gas, chemical and power.
One more stand alone category of Strainers is Metal Strainers. They are used to sieve metallic or sometimes chemical impurities from the system, such as plastic, hydraulic oil, solvents, etc.
Thus we can see that choosing the right strainer for the pipeline system is very critical to hassle free functioning of entire industry operation.
