One of the most basic human urges is to reproduce to have a family is usually regarded as a blessing, and to be denied one, a misfortune. But if 100 young, apparently normal couples have regular sexual intercourse for a whole year, without, without any sort of contraception, on average only 85 of the women will get pregnant at the end of that time. Seven or eight will never become pregnant no matter how hard they try.

Infertility maybe due to problems in either of the mentioned areas:

Poor sperm production

Poor egg production

Blockage of passage between sperm and egg

A hostile response to sperm by the woman's body

Remember that infertility is a shared problem it is often not possible, even after full investigation, to say with certainty that one partner alone is responsible. Open discussion between partners is the best way of dealing with the disappointment, fears and worries that both may have.

One-third of all couples attending fertility clinics eventually have a baby. Many others achieve a baby after treatment by their family doctor alone.

The remedies

Artificial insemination

When an egg is fertilized inside the woman's body by semen which has not been introduced into the vagina at intercourse the process is known as artificial insemination. Instead the semen is introduced with a syringe into the region of the neck on the womb in the hope that the sperm will then travel up to fertilize the egg. There are two types of artificial insemination by the husband (AIH), and by a donor (AID).

Extracorporeal fertilization

When an egg is removed from a woman and fertilized by the father's sperm outside her body, the process is known medically as extracorporeal fertilization. The popular test-tube baby for the resulting child is a misnomer, since test-tubes are not used in the procedure.

Fertility drugs

Some women do not make eggs easily. The process depends upon the secretion from the pituitary glands of hormones or internal messengers which cause the immature eggs in the ovaries to ripen and come to the surface.

There are two ways of stimulating the ovary. The first is by giving the pills which cause the pituitary glands to make more of the hormones which stimulate the ovary to produce mature eggs. The second is to inject extra hormone if the woman is not producing enough of her own.

Once a woman becomes pregnant after taking fertility drugs, she usually has a normal pregnancy and delivery.
