Inflation And Its Effects

The inflation rate in India as on April 2012 was reported to be 7.23%

. This figure dipped a little as compared to 10.01% in September 2011. The average rate of inflation in India between 1969 and 2010 was 7.99%, with an all time high of 34.68% in September 1974 and an all time low of -11.31% in May 1976. The effects of inflation are evident in our everyday lives with the prices of everything from basic necessities like vegetables and provisions to premium high end products hitting the roof. Literally every time you go to the grocery store you notice the price of certain commodities has increased. The best example of the ill effects of inflation is the soaring prices of petrol.

The petrol price in Mumbai today is Rs. 73.81 per liter. Now here is the shocking part, did you know that the petrol prices on the 27th of February 2012 were Rs. 51.68 per liter? So in little over two years the price per liter of petrol has increased by Rs.22.13. thats almost a 30% increase in a span of two years. 2011 alone saw four petrol price hikes and this is not going to stop anytime soon, the prices of petrol are going to constantly keep increasing. Due to this the first thing people look at when planning to purchase a car is the mileage. And with such high fuel prices this is bound to happen. All automobile manufacturers have also changed their focus from luxury and extravagance to economy and mileage. All car companies manufacture at least one or two cars whose main focus is giving a higher mileage. The extremely popular hatchback segment comprises of premium and normal hatchbacks, both of which give a much superior mileage to sedans and SUVs. Hatchbacks are smaller in size and much lighter in weight, this makes for a better mileage and also makes driving in our traffic stricken roads a lot easier.

Most of us must have seen the Maruti Kitna Dete Hai TV commercials, these ad is perfectly describe the Indian consumers mentality, where they are obsessed with mileage and with the surge in petrol prices who would blame them. Cars like the Alto K10, A-star and the Hyundai Eon all claim to give a mileage of 20+ kmpl, if driven properly. This proves how mileage has become more of a deciding factor for most people as compared to power, looks or comfort. There are several hatchbacks from which one can choose from today, but the major question on everyones mind is which is the best mileage car in India?
