Influencer Reward

I recently was talking to a friend about influencer marketing and word of mouth advertising when we came to a very important question. "How do you reward an influencer"? To illustrate, once you've contacted a prolific blogger and gotten them to promote your particular brand or service, do you pay them? According to the FTC, as long as you disclose this financial relationship, everything is a-okay. A follow up question came and it shocked me just as well. Do you pay them in advance, or after? Well, paying after seems the most common. I mean we all do it. Sending a gift basket to a customer after they purchase your service is commonplace.

But then I started thinking. Why? Why not just put a few big twitter handles and bloggers on the payroll as endorsers? Two words: reverse psychology. Well, not really. More like unmarketing. To define: marketing yourself indirectly, or without making your intent known. Acting altruistically to gain "brownie points" with the customer. Now this may seem off-putting, but think about it for a second. This is how it's been done for a long time. Everyone does it. Even people who have nothing really to market. Say you are a pastry chef. You own a pastryrestaurantand you bake ALL the pastries. All of them. Now say, for charity, every Sunday(or something) you donate some pastries to a local church for consumption during their service. Say you quickly become known for your delicious, scrumptious, delectablepastries and quickly gain a huge boost in customers. Are you a hideous awful person for doing this? Absolutely not. You are giving those pastries away for a proper cause and their value and deliciousness is noted and through word of mouth influence you gain more customers.

This is what I'm talking about. Starting a following this way is natural and how has been done for centuries. You aren't a scheming bastard by giving your pastries away for free and gaining customers for it. So rewarding someone for helping you out is just as natural. Rewarding influencers for working for you. Unmarketing. There it is.
