Information About Bearded Dragons
Native Australian lizards are some of the most interesting, unusual and just down right bizarre reptiles in the world. Belonging to this group is the ever so popular bearded dragon, famous for the set of spines which resemble a 'beard' when inflated. There is much to know about these spectacular creatures and you might find them to be rather amusing.
Naturally found in desert, open woodland and coastal regions of Australia they come in a variety of species, shapes, sizes and colors. Only a few species however are available in the pet trade. NB: This is because most bearded dragons available today were illegally smuggled out of Australia in the 1970's as a result of strict export laws established in the 1960's. These dragons were then laundered around the world until they were considered legal imports in various countries. Today all or most bearded dragons available outside of Australia are descendants of these smuggled beardies. But remember keeping bearded dragons is perfectly legal and many people around the world enjoy the hobby.
Bearded dragons make great pets because of their calm temperament. They're also quite easy to care for and are safe to be handled by the young and old - an all round perfect addition to the family. Feeding them is hassle free as they eat just about anything and you can provide a balanced diet with the items already found in your fridge. They do require a bit of space however and you'll also need to invest in a bit of equipment. In saying that though, once you're set up, that's it! You might need to replace a light bulb every now and then but otherwise you shouldn't need to invest anymore money or time into buying and setting up equipment.
They've also been found to breed well and this has contributed to their success in the pet trade. However it's very important to understand that it requires a lot of hard work, commitment, time and money. This is because of the nutrition requirements of the female and babies, plus the additional equipment and increased space required. None the less, because of their popularity they should be quite easy to sell and can be great fun seeing a clutch of cute baby beardies come into the world.
