Information About Growing Grapes At Home

Grapevines could be ornamental and they also provide shade

, so it is a good idea to consider growing grapes at home. It can be used as a screening plant when you plant it on a trellis. Grapes are ideal for cooking or to make jams etc. at home.

It is important that the correct cultivars are chosen if you want to succeed at growing grapes. There are cultivars that will produce more than 20 pounds of fruit per vine per year. It is possible for the vines to produce fruit for a time period in excess of 40 years once the vines are established.

The berries that the vines will bear depend on the cultivars that you have chosen. They might be purple, blue, red or greenish- yellow in color. These can be seedless or seeded. There are those that are perfect as table grapes and others that are better for wine-making. It is a good plan to select and plant different cultivars for home use. This will allow the harvest to be spread over a few weeks. Do not bother to choose different cultivars if your aim is to plant only a few vines. Bees will not be required to pollinate those vines that are generally used for home growing.

Choose varieties that are not prone to disease. Rain during spring and humid, hot summers promote diseases that will attack grapes although there are no types that are totally resistant to disease. Early spring is the ideal time to plant the vines. Try not to plant them during fall as the ensuing cold may kill them.

The first step is to prepare the soil and thereafter plant the grapevines. You should add fertilizer to the ground and ensure that the ground is kept free of weeds. Check regularly for disease or insects. Prune the dead or broken sections as well as the roots.

The top growth should be pruned to a single cane. Tie the vines to a stake during the first year. Damage will be prevented if you do this as the plant will be kept off the ground. It will also make spraying of the plant easier. Water the plants on a regular basis. The first year of growth is extremely important. Fertilizing the soil is vital and the amounts that are applied must be increased annually. Do this approximately one month before the new growth during spring. Apply lime sparingly and only do so if there is a requirement for it and if a soil test has been performed.

The usual establishment time for vines is approximately 3 years. A trellis or arbor support system should be set up by the second year. At this time, training of the vines and tying them to the support system should be done. To get a steady annual amount of fruit, annual pruning is vital. Do this during the dormant season once the threat of severe cold weather has gone.

Growing grapes at home could be a very satisfying experience if you are willing to give them the attention and hard work they need. The multitude of uses that you have for the product will also make it rewarding.
