You could suggest that you are going to reveal something of particular interest or that you will have somebody on the phone that can provide some useful information. Maybe it's even a vendor talking about some new product and you host that call. The call then gives you an opportunity to do some aggressive promotion and also capture more email addresses into your system. Create a sign up for the call and have that sign up process include people opting in so they can get access to the call details. Through that process, you are then able to build your mailing list.
Surveys, calls, special reports, and other free resources are all good options to begin with and try out to see which one works the best for your needs. Now, one of the things that I would also encourage you to do is see if every now and then you could get a particular call about a topic. Maybe reach out to your providers. Say you are marketing to photographers.
Now that most photography is digital, maybe reach out to printing paper providers and see if they are interested in sponsoring your call. Say, "Hey I'm doing a call. I'm going to be mailing out postcards to these three hundred people. How about you sponsor the postcards and I'll put the little logo on here that says you are sponsoring this information. We'll mail this out to everybody and on the call, I'll thank you and maybe you can say a few words to everybody that's on the line." That way, it's kind of a free way of generating your list.
You could probably rent mailing lists or buy them and that is part of what you include in the sponsorship. You get your name out there as the person who's bringing this free information to everybody and you get there email. You're converting a mail list into an email list.
There are thousands of people who dream of turning their hobby into a business and if you're willing to cater to them, why not create a business that shows them how to make their idea a reality. Make yourself different because so many other people are selling how to do ideas. You could show up with these magazines and everything else and explain how to turn your hobby into a business.
