I wonder how many times I've professed admiration for the Internet... if admiration, in fact, is the proper word to use in this case. "I love the Internet," or, "Don't you just love the Internet?" are both phrases I've used more than once. And I don't throw around that word 'love' lightly.
I once read that there are 22 kinds of 'love' in the Latin language. I wonder if one of them applies to my infatuation with the information super highway! I don't let it keep me up nights, but here's what I mean.
First off, I can't remember ever being faced with a question whose answer couldn't be found through a bit of net surfing. The laptop is almost always switched on at my place and if we're watching TV and my wife asks (as so frequently occurs) how old such-and-such an actor is I can usually find the answer in less than a minute or two. It's amazing how many times I automatically answer, "He (or she) is about my age (58)." Most of the good ones are getting older, I think.
Another thing I admire about the Internet is its incredible growth in such a short span of years. A query that used to return a mere handful of hits can now bring millions. I always wondered how that guy who runs the millionth listed website feels about his position. I'm also curious as to how many web searchers ever get past the first page or two when searching.
