Whenever you purchase a brand new car from a dealer, you can pretty much be assured that is going to come with some kind of a warranty to offer you peace of mind in the situation that if something went wrong with the car within the period of the warranty, you would be covered. Typically the warranty will cover for either 3 years/36,000 miles or sometimes even up to 10 years/100,000 miles meaning that your car would be covered for wither 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first). While it can pretty much be expected that a new car is going to come with a warranty, used cars can also have warranties but they will not be as protective as if on a new car.

One of the main differences that you might notice with a used car warranty when compared to a new car warranty is the fact that the warranty may not cover the exact parts that are in a used car; whereas a new car warranty fits precisely to the components that exist in the car. While a new car warranty will extensively cover a new car from bumper to bumper, powertrain and accessories, a used car warranty is a little more lacking in nature. A used car warranty typically will cover a wide variety of different components but not all or most them. Because of this, warranties on used cars are frowned upon because they leave the buyer a little confused as what he or she is protected against. It would not be a good experience having something go wrong only to find out that all along you were not protected against it in the first place.

While some used car warranties are a bit daunting some, a warranty that covers at least some of the car is better than no warranty at all. The problem with used cars is merely that they are used, meaning that they have been around longer. As cars start to get older, the cost to repair them is going to get higher which can take a toll on anybody's wallet. You're driving along one day and you notice that your car is acting funny. Come to find out, you need your timing belt replaced which is a relatively expensive job; to make matters worse, you find out that your used car warranty will not cover the cost of this repair. That means the money is coming out of your pocket, and when you do not have the extra cash on hand, this can have a decimating effect on your finances.

Whenever you purchase a used car, it is important to stare closely at the warranty and make sure that the car is a good buy and what you are protected against. Some dealers can even be persuaded into negotiating the warranty in order to make a sale, which could work in your favor. Always keep in mind that any warranty is better than no warranty at all.
