What is a Victorian Style or an Edwardian Style? This can be a tricky question seeing as the conservatory industry has no 'standards' to pick from.

Some conservatory companies call a Victorian design "Edwardian" or "Georgian". You will also come across phrases such as "Home Extender" when others use the term "lean-to".

The solution to the slightly confused marketing within the conservatory industry is to take matters into yoru own hands. Make sure you are overly explicit with what you want. Descibe your requirements in detail and insist on going through mock up drawings that clearly show what you will be getting.

Locking Systems

Most conservatory have the standard locks for windows and doors. These standards are espagnolette multi-point locks (including night vent position) on windows and a five point lock for doors. Additions to the standard lock include shoot-bolt locks, shoot locks, Entry guard and SAC bolt locking etc.

Just ask your supplier for further information and always ask about the quality of the locks provided since they can range considerably.

Jargon

It helps to know the jargon also, conservatory sections or example are also known as "splays". Suppliers will sometimes refer to three bay fronted Victorians as five sided conservatories (the LH and RH sides being the extra two sides) whilst five bay fronted Victorians are also referred to as seven sided conservatories. Confusing huh!

The colour of your conservatory is also variable. You can choose from a range of PVCu colours. Despite most conservatories being white, both PVCu and aluminium can be red, green, blue, pink or whatever colour you desire!
