Ingrown Toenail Surgery For Long Term Relief
Ingrown toenail surgery is best avoided and whilst the procedure is relatively painless
, many people prefer to exhaust less invasive treatment options before deciding to go under the knife. For less severe cases to prevent the condition from deteriorating and to take the first steps towards ingrown toenail correction. There are a number of home treatment options available to ease swelling, pain and to encourage the nail to grow out from the skin.
The most effective treatment is to soak the feet in a warm solution of Epsom salts, which will help to target infection and to keep the area clean. The skin and the nail will soften, and swelling can be reduced. After a soak, the toenail can be treated with an ingrown toenail file. By filing down the edge of the nail, any rough edges can be removed to prevent irritation, and excess nail can be safely filed down. It offers a safer and more hygienic method of nail removal than just trimming with scissors, which tends to leave sharp edges which can dig into the skin.
However when an ingrown toenail has been allowed to deteriorate, or when a congenital deformity is permanently causing the nail to grow into the skin, it is necessary to have ingrown toenail surgery. The procedure is aimed at targeting the immediate problem, and also preventing its recurrence. Ingrown toenail surgery involves the removal of part of the toenail which eases the symptoms, and usually part of the nailbed is chemically destroyed with phenol. By destroying part of the nailbed, the nail does not grow back into the skin.
Surgery is rarely performed under general anaesthetic, unless specifically requested, with the procedure relatively minor. It can be performed on an outpatient basis, with no stay in hospital required. Whilst the surgery itself is painless, it can leave the toe sore for a few days with more involved surgery taking a good couple of weeks to recover from. During the ingrown toenail surgery recovery process, the dressing on the toe will need to be changed on a daily basis, and care taken not to knock or stub the toe. Keeping off the feet for a few days is ideal; however movement with a crutch can help to ensure that no undue pressure is placed on the foot, with driving unwise until a full emergency stop can be performed.
The treatment is invasive, and for many, may be avoided until absolutely necessary. However as unpleasant as it may sound, it is the best way to ensure that the ingrown toenail is treated at its root cause, as without the underlying problem being corrected, the condition is likely to return time and time again.
