Initial Integrated Reasoning Scores And Experiences

Although the percentiles will change as more test takers sit for the exam

, the initial score distribution shows a good spread of scores, said Ashok Sarathy, vice president, GMAT Program.

IR section became part of GMAT Test starting from 5th June 2012. The IR Score does not affect the total GMAT Score of 800 which is purely based on the score achieved in Quantitative and Verbal sections. But IR score will definitely be a consideration in admissions as well as in getting into Corporate world.

Like Analytical Writing Assessment section score, Integrated Reasoning section score will not be released as part of unofficial score card given at the test center. This score will be given after around 20 days as part of the official GMAT score.

As per GMAC, the scale of 1 to 8 was chosen to reflect the available precision of the IR section. The test consists of 12 questions, most of which have multiple integral parts.GMAT Test takers must answer correctly each integrated part to get credit for the question. Since the aim of integrated reasoning is to check the ability to solve problems in different formats and from different sources, the questions have been designed into multiple integral parts so that the credit is given only when each integral part is correct.

Basically, the new IR Section measures 4 specific skills - namely 'make judgment based on information from multiple sources', 'organize information to see relationships that solve multiple inter-related problems', 'combine and manipulate information to solve complex problems' and 'synthesize information presented in graphics, texts and numbers'.

The Integrated Reasoning score will give schools a standardized measure of these important skills, Sarathy noted.

Throughout the development process of the IR Section, the management program faculty and large majority of global employers found the specific skills to be measured in Integrated Reasoning section to be very important and useful.

Although the GMAC website mentions that IR Section is something test takers do everyday, but some journals had referred new GMAT to be scary. But takers of the New GMAT Test say that IR is not as scary as it was mentioned to be.

"The IR section was not horrible for me at all, I think anyone with real world job experience ... should not really experience any issue with this section," says a supply chain professional based in the Dallas-Fort Worth area who took the new GMAT.

"I think it's overblown. No truth to it. They removed one essay and added the IR. So maybe it benefits some and not others, and vice versa. Having been out of college since 1999 and working in accounting and finance, my work experience definitely helped me on the new section," says another candidate who took new GMAT.
