Injured Man Transported To Hickory Following Accident

A gentleman from Newton was recently involved in an accident with an 18-wheeler when

the car he was driving was struck by the truck as he attempted to pass on the right. He was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory following the accident and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Terry Reeves was attempting to move from the left to the right lane, according to a report from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The report states that she did not see the car driven by 57-year-old Thomas Blakely and she consequently struck his car when she attempted to switch lanes.

After being struck, Blakelys car flew across the front of the truck and was then propelled from the guardrail into median. Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. Though Blakely appeared to be attempting to pass the truck on the right, Reeves was charged with an unsafe movement violation as a result of the accident.

Preliminary reports indicate that Blakelys car had a total of $3,500 in damages. It was not driveable following the accident. The truck that Reeves was driving sustained $1,200 in damage and was able to drive away from the scene of the accident. At the time of the news report from the Burke County News Herald, it was unclear whether either driver had spoken to or retained lawyers.
