Inside The World Of An Overbite

One of the most common problems that beset most people nowadays is the presence of an overbite

. Overbite happens when the upper jaw or teeth, or both, just forward over the lower jaw. This leads to an excessive space in between the upper and lower front teeth during occlusion.

Unknown to many people, however, an overbite is not only unsightly but could also lead to a number of breathing problems as well as problems associated with dental health. It is because of this that most orthodontists would recommend the correction of an overbite.

Overbite can be of two types a skeletal overbite and a dental overbite. The skeletal overbite is when the upper jaw or maxilla is the one jutting forward. Surgery is oftentimes required in order to correct it. On the other hand, the dental overbite is when only the teeth are involved. This can easily be corrected with the help of braces or smile design methods.

The two common ways used by any Calgary orthodontist in correcting an overbite are jaw surgery and braces. Which one you would go for would depend on your budget, how much you are willing to wait for the correction to have visible results, and how shy are you about wearing braces.

Jaw surgery, as mentioned before, is only resorted to when the overbite is skeletal in nature. In cases like these, the orthodontic Calgary clinic would reposition either the maxilla or the mandible depending on the degree of protrusion. Of course, a detailed study, which involves taking of X-rays of the jaws, is done first before proceeding to the surgery.

There are some cases where the overbite has not yet progressed to an advanced stage. Usually a Calgary orthodontist would just recommend that the person under a smile design program. In this program, the doctors work their way around the overbite and make it into something that would not only hide the overbite but also enhance the personality of the patient.
