The number one rule of buying a used car is to make sure it's in quality shape. The last thing you want is to buy a used car and have it immediately break-down. By following the steps listed below, you will be more likely to find a high-quality car prior before you make the decision to buy. Before you test drive a car, make sure to inspect it while the car is in park. You don't want to discover a pressing issue with the car as soon as you pull on the highway. First, walk around the perimeter of the car and make notes of exterior damage such as dents and scrapes. One, it gives you an idea of what condition the car is in and two, you don't want to be blamed for any scratches that "suddenly" show up on your test drive. As you walk around the exterior of the car, look for any paint chips or deep set-in scratches. Deep scratches could mean the development of rust is in the near future. Also, scratches on the undercarriage of the car could indicate off-road abuse or a former accident. Next, pop open the hood of the car. You'll want to make notice of fluid levels and the general wear and tear under the hood. Pop the gas cap and see how difficult it may or may not be to open. You'll also want to open and close all the car doors to ensure they work properly and fit snug within the frame. Look at the hinges and door latches for any signs of probable rust damage. Additionally, one of the most important aspects of inspecting a used car's exterior is through the examination of the tires. You'll want to make sure the tires have a good amount of tread on them and ask questions if you see un-even wear and tear on specific tires. If you're confused you can try the trick of sticking a penny in the treads, you never want to see too much of Lincoln's face. Next, inspect the windshield. You'll definitely want to make note of any cracks in the glass; even the tiniest ones have the potential to grow. Turn the windshield wipers off and on and make sure they don't streak when they encounter water. You can simply test this by cleaning the windshield with wiper fluid. Now that you've taken the steps to get into the interior of the car you want to literally inspect everything. Test the heat and air-conditioning, turn on the radio and CD player, play with the interior lights. Also, be sure to inspect the seat belts in both the front and back seat. Check out the emergency brake, you'll want to put the brake on and then turn it off. Make sure it works with ease, you don't want the emergency break to stick. Also, look for the oil change sticker in the top left of the interior windshield. This could give you a clue as to how well the previous owner took care of their car. Always be sure to check for registration, car maintenance records, and the presence of the owner's manual. Never feel the need to rush through inspecting a car before you decide to test drive or buy a used car, especially if you're buying from a private seller. You need to make sure you are buying a vehicle that is quality and will protect you and other passengers in the long term.
