Installing Bathroom Taps

Installing Bathroom Taps

Installing Bathroom Taps

There many reasons for you to want to fit new taps in your bathroom. It may be as part of a whole new bathroom fit, it may be because your old taps have become worn and rusty, or it could just be because you want new taps!

Whatever your reason, installing bathroom taps can be tricky business if you don't really know what your doing, but can also be such a small job, that its not really worth calling a professional to do it for you (unless its part of a whole new bathroom). So I'm here to help, and give you a guide to installing new bathroom taps.

If you have one hole for the taps then you will need a mono-bloc mixer (this has two smaller pipers coming out of one hole for hot and cold), and if you have two holes for the taps then you either have two separate taps for hot and cold or a two hole mixer (two holes, one sprout). You will find some taps also have a lever for controlling the plug; though installing this is another matter.

Firstly you're going to need to remove the old taps. The first step in this is to disconnect the water supply, how you do this will depend on how your water supply is connected, so you will need to look into this a bit more, as its easier said than done. After you have disconnected the water supply you're going to need to drain the remaining water from the taps, and to do this simply turn them on full, and let the water out!

Next you need have a basin wrench (more commonly known as a crows foot spanner), or a tap tool. You will then use this to undo the nut which connects the supply pipe to the tap. It is likely that water will come from the pipes and taps, even though you have drained them, so make sure you have cloth ready to catch or clean up the excess water.

After the taps have been removed from the supply taps, you need to use the same tools to remove the taps from the sink, basin or bath. Once the old taps have been removed you will need to clean away any old sealing material.

Before attaching the new taps, you will need to compare them to the old taps to see if a shank adapter is required. If you find that the tails of the new taps are plastic, then you will need a plastic connector prevent damage to the thread.

If you are fitting a mono-bloc then you will require reducing couplers. These will allow the 10mm pipe of the mono-bloc to connect to the standard sized 15mm supply pipe. Then to fit the new taps, position the tap in the mounting hole ensuring that the washers are in place.

Then you will need to secure the tap in place with the back nut provided. When the tap is securely in place you can connect the supply pipes to the tails of the taps. You can either connect the taps with normal tap connectors. Or you could use corrugated copper piping.

One you have connected the taps, you can then turn the water supply back on. Then you will need to check the new pipe work for leaks and if you find any leaks, they can mostly be stopped just by simply tightening joins.
