Installing a towel bar
Installing a towel bar, when you are not properly prepared, can be an intimidating job. In essence, the process could be broken down into four major parts or tasks, the purchase, location or where to place the towel bar, what fasteners to use, and final attachment or more commonly known as the moment of truth.

Task # 1
The purchase of your towel bar is perhaps the easiest part of a towel bar installation. This is the step where you can go hog-wildreviewing a cornucopia of options ranging from brass to brushed nickel to oil rubbed bronze. Generally, towel bars are available in all the big box stores as well as Amazon or Ebay. The best advice I can give in regards to buying a towel bar is to pick what you like and like what you pick. Don't be pushed or persuaded into buying something that you are not in love with, for the odds are, you will be looking at your towe Task # 2
When you get your new purchase home (or delivered), you should have the following parts, a template for drilling holes, fasteners, and the towel bar itself. There may be a few other specialty items included such as Allen wrenches or a screwdriver. Don't panic if you do, as these are included to make your installation a little easier and as such, don't ever lose them as "Murphy's Law" rules the day and I can guarantee that you will desperately need these specialty items 15 minutes after you lose them.

Take the towel bar and start moving around your bathroom and placing it against the wall in the locations you think will work with your style or tastes. There is no wrong way to do this, as I have learned over the years is that if you like what you have done, it is done right!
Once you have found a location you that will work for you, tape the template to the wall using a low adhesive tape such as blue painter's tape or scotch tape. Either will work as long as it is not overly sticky, and repainting a wall after you have pulled the paint off is really a pain! After the template is fixed in place with one piece of tape per short edge, use your level to measure the horizontal or long edge for level. It won't be, as it never is, but by removing the tape on one edge you can easily adjust your template until it is level.
Now you get to the fun part, power tools! Though you can use a high capacity hammer drill, it is best if you stick to the small and more delicate electric screwdriver. They are excellent for around the house use and in a number of cases you can attach the charger to the garage wall and always have a ready to use power tool without the cumbersome task of lugging cords and cases through the house.
Take your electric screwdriver or power drill and drill holes into the template where indicated. In most cases you will need to drill two holes on each side of the template. You can now remove the template from the wall.
Task # 3
Fasteners are probably the most important part of the operation. In my experience, the manufacturers of the towel bar are interested in using the cheapest fasteners possible. You are welcome to use what the manufacturers provide, but I prefer to beef up my attachments so that I won't have to troubleshoot a sagging towel holder in six months. As a heavy towel or a wayward elbow can & will easily loosen a towel bar using standard fasteners. Therefore, I would recommend using a screw in fastener like what is shown below. In my experience, they have never failed my family or me.
No matter what fastener you use, place one in each hole that you have previously drilled.
Task # 4
Now for the final assembly and moment of truth, every manufacturer of towel bars will have a different design, but all will have the following traits in common. Those traits will be the brace, cover and bar.
First, attach each brace, (there should be two) with the screws provided to the fasteners using your electric screwdriver. If you have a slot on the brace, make sure it is on the downward edge as this will be where the attachment screws for the brace will be attached.
Second, place one of the covers over the brace and securely attach it using either the tools provided or as in most cases a small screwdriver. As noted before, the attachment screw should be on the downward edge.
Third, place the bar into the slot of the cover you have already installed and into the cover you have yet to install. Then slide the uninstalled cover into place and secure it as you did with the previous cover.
Lastly, the moment of truth!
Place your favorite towel on to the towel bar and enjoy
