What a fantastic course Cycle Training Wales organise. The top instructors Andrew and Nick provided excellent tuition in the fundamentals of instructor training over 4 days. Based in Cardiff Cycle Training Wales also provide a short mechanics course for cyclists. If youre a regular commuter or want to get back on the bike for a regular fitness regime, they have all you need to know to get started. National Standard instructor training will equip you with the skills to teach cycling to children and adults. This course covers all the skills required to deliver cycling courses, including: National Standard training objectives activities and techniques to teach NS levels 1 to 3 risk assessment and emergency procedures protection of children and vulnerable adults The mechanics course is as follows from the wording in their website: This one-day course is aimed at those who wish to develop skills for checking and repairing bicycles. Participants will be able to work on their own bikes during the day session. The course will include: safety checking wheel and tyre removal puncture repair brake adjustment and pad replacement chain checking and replacement gear adjustment hub adjustments handlebar, headset, and saddle adjustments cleaning and lubrication The group I attended with were enthusiastic, humorous and varied in background and work experience. With a basic training of level 1 to help gauge the skill level of cyclists before progressing to level 2 and 3, various activities were introduced to motivate and develop basic cycling skills. The following day we were taken back to the empty car park which was already risk assessed before arrival by our instructors. We then began the nervous task of becoming an instructor for what seemed like hours but was probably just a few minutes. Each of us were given a session plan to perform. With degrees of success from us all the experience was fantastic. Each attendee were given feedback by the group and therefore knew where to correct our performance next time. Here comes the rain again! The heavens opened up and we all got drenched but not cold. With this part of the course complete we headed back on our bikes to Chapter House canteen/cafe. Theory part of the next level conducted in the classroom this afternoon...slowly drying out but at least the hot coffee and some food made the morale become a little more raised. Level 3 was interesting, actual quiet roads with a few t junctions, parked cars and a few coppers looking for a criminals thrown into the mix. Manoeuvres I normally take for granted on an everyday basis cycling through the roads in Gwent were totally broken down to a basic level. Each potential hazard, obstacle and potential scenario were considered and how to explain this to a client whos first experience would be riding on the highway with you. A real eye opener to say the least. The final day took us into the busiest place on the planet...well it seemed like it to me. With so many obstacles and pedestrians walking straight out in front of you at any given moment, cars pulling out and stopping sharply in front of you...I knew this was going to be a big test. With the added thought of actually instructing a fellow attendee through the roads of Cardiff I was on edge to say the least. But with thanks to Nick and Andrew my fears were buried as Nick gave a brief chat on how to handle the situation. This became a breeze and I did get excited knowing that this would not be a problem. Well done Nick and Andrew on such a brilliant course and very well executed.
