Intel Working On Super 48-core Processor For Future Mobile Devices
Intel, the chip maker giant, is planning to enter into the smartphone space with the new low power Atom processor
. However, the company hopes to ship powerful 48-core microprocessors for smartphones and tablets, in the next five to ten years. And, looking back at the pace of advancements, the goal seems very reasonable. The company is working on the project with a concentration on finding new ways for managing and using multiple cores in a mobile device. And, according to the researchers, the multi-core CPU would become ready in coming five to ten years of time.
In just few years, we have moved from a single core to quad core chips for mobile devices; however, a device with 48-core CPU would bring a revolution in mobile computing. One of the major benefit of having multi cores is the device gets an ability to divide the different tasks amongst each core, which help in completing the heavy computational tasks more quickly. Such devices would be capable of efficient multitasking as compared with current chips due to sharing of computing resources.
The software would have to be made more parallel to take the advantages of the multi-core processor and divide the computing requirements amongst available CPU cores. Moreover, by spreading the workload amongst multiple parallel cores and reducing the strain on a single core, the overall processor will become more energy efficient.
A 48-core processor sounds killing, with good reasons, to add multi-core power to chips. This will allow a tablet, phone, or other mobile devices to execute multiple tasks simultaneously without sharing resources. This will lead to better support for multitasking, faster performance, and low power consumption.
This does not only mean that you can listen your favourite songs while surfing the web. Applications designed to take the benefit of multi-core chips will also work smoothly.
