One very big aspect of this job is directly communication and talking with clients. This job often entails making cold calls to get more clients and traveling to meet with various individuals who you may or may not have a set appointment with. You will always be on the look out for new account and clients that you can get to advertise for, and that means doing whatever is necessary. The relationships that you have with your clients as an advertising salesman is critical. You need to know what their needs are what specific area they are targeting, both geographically and demographically. You will want to find out about all of the client's products and what their customers are like as well. Learning all of these things will put you in a much better place to do your job effectively and keep your clients happy with the services you are providing them.

Besides just knowing how to get new clients and keep them happy, you will also need to perform other regular duties such as analyzing sales data and demographics. You will also be creating sales reports for your clients, so you will have something to show them. The more organized and accurate your reports are, the happier they will be and the longer you will have them as clients. Education and training is a very important aspect of advertising sales, and while it may be okay to have just a high school diploma for a position that is entry-level, anything above will most likely require a college degree.

If you want to go to college for such a position in this line of work, then you will want to seek out some good schools that have great business programs where you can learn specifically about marketing and advertising. The training and education that you receive will look great on the resume that you submit to certain companies, and in the end you will be glad that you went to school for it. The more training you have and the better your school is, the better your chances will be of getting hired in to an advertising sales position right away.
