Interested in Learning Violin on Your Own? Read This First
Learning the violin on your own isn't the best method for everyone. Maybe you don't have what it takes to teach yourself violin, but maybe you do. There are a few things you should hone in on to see what learning option is best for you and which ones are just doomed to fail.
If you want this article to be worth the read you need to check your ego at the door. If you're biased in your analysis, any recommendations will be worthless. If you can, you might want to ask someone else how they see you in these areas.
Here are the most important characteristics of a self-taught violinist. These are, in order of importance: motivation or discipline, creativity, being observant, and patience.
The first two are put together because they both serve to help you practice. Motivation is more pleasant, but discipline will keep you going in the long run. To build up motivation work on your reasons why you want to learn the violin and picture the end result. Improving discipline is simple. Practice on a schedule no matter what. Don't get caught in the trap of saying you'll miss it just once, because it never ends up being just once.
Creativity is needed as a backup plan so you practice. If you're creative enough you can overcome your lack of motivation or discipline. You could pay someone to make you practice by locking you in a room or beating you up if you don't. Another example is betting several people a fair amount of money that you'll be able to play a certain song without errors by a given date. Hopefully you understand what I mean now.
Being observant comes in at two separate stages. The first is to make sure you're practicing the right positions and notes, and that they sound as they should. The other stage is when it comes time to evaluate your progress honestly. The forth component then comes in.
Patience is also to reinforce the first two as most people aren't very good with motivation and discipline. You may expect incredible results in short time periods if you aren't patient. Such expectations will destroy you motivation and break your schedule, then what happens is anyone's guess. If you aren't setting realistic goals and taking true measures of progress, you're far more likely to give up. Sometimes you won't play at your best, but don't be discouraged and just play through it.
You may be asking why these are only characteristics of those who teach themselves violin. That wasn't how I meant this article to be. These characteristics are key even if you aren't teaching yourself. These are all influenced by whether or not you have someone there teaching you.
By learning from a teacher, they will help with setting expectations for progress, and keep you driven to practice. They also correct you if you mess up. Even the best teachers can't make you learn though. The determining factor is going to be you every time.
