Interesting How the Mind Works

The following characters are fictitious, but their life experiences are not.

Farley Bumstead started life with one parent induced strike against him, his name. Farley was born to lower middle class parents, father a truck driver, mother a seamstress. Both had very little education, felt victimized all their lives. They were bitter working class people who fought over money daily and had very negative attitudes about everything and everybody.

Farley was over mothered and forced to wear pressed pants and oxfords to tough schools. He wore glasses at an early age and was picked on relentlessly by every school bully and mocked and laughed at by most of the other kids for being so uncool.

When his teenage hormones kicked in Farley overreacted. He started to skip school, stole things, got kicked out of high school and started drinking at fifteen. He had many jobs and finally landed at the local hydro company as a laborer, served as the union president and later moved up to the position lineman for the county, got married--and predictably got stuck in a similar rut to those around him. Negative and easily angered he knew little about the outside world.

He had reached a dead end in his late twenties and already felt trapped, and then Farley got recruited into a pyramid (multi-level marketing) scheme. He became exposed to books like Think and Grow Rich and The Power of Positive thinking. He was at first skeptical, but gullible, as well as intrigued by this new way of thinking--Farley decided he wanted to get rich. He studied every self-help book he could get his hands on.

Normally shy and nervous around even small groups of people, Farley became an accomplished public speaker and professional motivator who spoke before large crowds in many international cities. Today he is a successful international entrepreneur.

Jonathon Phelps was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His parents loving and attentive, smart, extremely positive, happy, very successful and well known and respected. Jon attended the best schools, associated with like-minded peers and became worldly at an early age.

Jon served his country with a stint in the military, and joined the family business at an entry level so that he could learn the business from the bottom up. He is now the CEO, has an adoring wife and three well-mannered kids. His family is a new generation copy of how his parents think.

Here's the point--Jon's experience is a happy one due to the experiences and thinking of those around him. He simply emulated what he was exposed to but his experience is still a direct result of his thinking. The difference between Jon and Farley's experience is that proper thinking came naturally to Jon, that's what he was exposed to.

Farley however had to work at it. His introduction to life was an entirely different experience. He first had to realize that his life was of his own making and that if he wanted to change he had to believe he could. And then he had to redirect his thinking, not an easy task when your exposure to life had been the opposite to what it takes to be happy--control of your own thoughts.

The bottom line--both of their experiences came from how they thought about their lives. When Farley changed his attitude and thoughts about how his life was evolving his life experience changed along with it.

An old clich goes like this--'you are what you think about all day long'.

And so as night follows day your experience in life is in how you perceive it, what you think about moment to moment. You are the victim of your own thinking, like it or not.
