While Malta is one of Europe's smallest countries

, the amount of fun you can have there is inversely proportional to its size. Just over 300 square kilometers, I guess you could say it is one of the best kept secrets there is for having a relaxing and entertaining holiday.

Malta consists of three islands; Malta Island, Comino and Gozo. Malta Island is the biggest of the three while Comino is the tiniest. The capital Valletta is named after Jean Parisot de la Valette. He was a leader of the defenders during the Turkish siege of Malta in the mid 16th century.

In terms of site seeing there is Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. These are two stone temples and very popular for tourists to Malta. Those who like the sea can go to Golden Bay which is situated on the northwest coast. Golden Bay can get quite crowed during the holiday season.

Blue Grotto is a series of caves and inlets. These can only be accessed by boat though.


St John's Co-Cathedral was built by one of the island's earliest residents. It is dedicated to the Knights who defended Malta from the Turks. In the Cathedral you have the tombs of the knights, one of which is reported to by that of Jean de Valette, after whom the city of Valetta is named.

If you like nature and outdoors activities, Malta is definitely a place for you. There are a number of beaches you can go to. If you like sailing that is definitely an option. Additionally there are hikes and walking tours you can go on.

Malta may not be as well known as other destinations such as London, New York or Paris. It may not have the iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, Times Square and the Eiffel Tower but that doesn't mean it isn't as good. In fact the opposite - instead of feeling like a tourist you can chill and relax. Part of travel is being exposed to new cultures and you can definitely do that in Malta.

Take food as an example. In Malta they have their own foods and it's a great experience to be able to sample some of them. The diet draws from both its Italian and British heritage. For instance fenkata is rabbit and many meals in Malta revolve around rabbit. Being by the water, there is a lot of seafood in the Maltese cuisine as well as soups. Malta also has its own type of beer which is called Cisk.

One of the great things about Malta is that you don't have to do anything special to be having a good time. It could be something as simple as having a coffee or going for a stroll in the streets at night. It could be walking through the markets looking for bargains or going to a concert. It is impossible to go to Malta without having a good time and after you leave you will realize why you haven't heard that much about it. Everyone who has been is trying to keep it a secret.
