Many people consider Interior design and interior decoration to be one and the same profession
. But they are different. Even though they seem to have a lot more similarities, they can not be used interchangeably. They both work their best to create beautiful homes. How do they differ?
In order to be an interior designer, one has to be certified. Hence, one intending to be a professional, has to go through training in order to gain a professional experience. Firms prefer to appoint those who have completed advanced degree in this field, since they are more perfect for the job of interior designing. In order to work as an interior decorator, one need not be certified. Natural abilities of a person play a huge part in decorating.
Focussing on the overall structure is the basic thing to do for interior designers; whereas decorators don't have to do the same. The main function of an interior decorator involves aesthetic improvement in the structure. They do not make any change in the basic structure. Their duties involve-Selecting right colour for the room, arranging furniture in such a fashion that it saves and increases space of the room, making appropriate lighting, choosing right artwork and fabrics, window covering etc. In a nutshell, it means their work is confined to particular space only. The interior designer enjoys more powers as compared to interior decorator. He may also change the architecture. They spend quite a huge amount of time on learning the architecture and structure of the building. They have to undergo less strenuous duties.
An interior designer has the advantage to specialse in a particular area of work. A decorator might not be so. He is not needed to expertise in one particular area, as he has to work in all areas.
These are the interior designers that have more knowledge about ecologically sustainable materials. Today, we are facing the threat of global warming. So, eco-friendly designs are more and more in demand.
The functions and duties of an interior designer involve function of decorating also. The scope of former is certainly greater than the later. Students having good practical knowledge and experience are more in demand in this industry. They are paid very well, indeed.

In the beginning, one might be confused regarding what to choose as a career option. In order to make up one's mind, one may talk to the professionals. There are many websites on the net, that display information through articles and blogs. They are informative. One may come across them while surfing the net. Further, talking to people who have experience of many many years, also helps to get a glimpse in this industry. But most importantly, listen to your heart. One can succeed in any profession, provided worked with the commitment. This profession is certainly not exceptional.
