Interior Design: The Proof Is In The Colors

When choosing the colors that will be used in a space

, there are many factors that must be considered. The color of a room is terribly important, as it sets the tone, mood and feelings that are conveyed within the space. It will also greatly affect how the space itself looks, even creating a feeling of more or less space in an area without changing the square footage at all.

Color for the walls of a room that is used by more than one person can often be decided in a way that makes everyone happy. With the popularity of painting and the frequency with which some people paint, deciding which colors you want can be a fun way to completely change the feeling of a room without spending a great deal of cash.

When everyone in the family can come to a compromise and find at least a color family they all agree in, then everyone will feel comfortable and the room will truly reflect the family that lives there. Paint chips are available in the paint stores, and if everyone picks their favorite at least everyone else will know where everyone stands. Working together so that everyone ends up pleased with the outcome is truly worth the trouble.

If you have already got the furniture that will go in the room, choosing paint that coordinates with the furniture is a must. Your sofas fabric color will most likely help decide what colors you put on your walls and your draperies. You will have to carefully coordinate these colors, and this is another way that paint chips can come in handy.

You can bring home several paint chips to compare with other colors that will be in the room. Also when you bring home a paint chip, you will get a better idea of what the color will really look like in the lighting in your space. You may love the yellow in the store, but hate the golden mustard color in your living room.

Another important aspect to take into consideration when choosing a paint color is the size of the room. Rooms that are smaller are typically painted a lighter color to keep from making the room seem any smaller. Darker paint tends to close in a room and make it seem smaller, but in a large open den area, or for a media room, dark paint works very well and can be very dramatic. Decisions in paint colors should also be made with any children in mind. Also stairways and halls where people have a tendency to bump into walls and scuff the paint can use a darker coat.
