Basically, when you decide to do this on your own, the first step is removing the old paint from the walls. It doesn't matter what type of paint was used before; you will still have to clean the wall prior to painting it again. In order to make this process a whole lot easier, just use water to moist the painting. By doing this you can also identify areas that are inflated so you can repair them.

Next, apply the plaster on the walls. After it dries up, you have to use something abrasive to smooth up the surface of the walls. Try sandpaper and start with one that has larger grains to obtain results quickly. Then, when you are almost done, switch to the one that has finer grains. This will help you obtain a smooth and even surface.

You can now proceed and apply the paint. If you want to obtain impeccable results, use primer before applying paint. It will allow the paint to dry out evenly.
