International Christmas Opera Forum opens in Minsk


The First International Christmas Opera Forum opens at the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater in Minsk on 7 December, BelTA has learnt.

On 7-12 December the audience will be able to enjoy the most popular opera performances by well-known Belarusian artists and international opera stars. Partaking in the forum will be 150 guests from Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Azerbaijan, Serbia, Spain and Uzbekistan.

The forum will open with Nabucco, the first full-scale production of Giuseppe Verdi's work on the Belarusian stage in 2010. The opera will feature Serbia's opera star Branislav Yatich and famous Spanish tenor Jorge Perdigon. The performance will be conducted by laureate of the International Contest of the Herbert von Karajan Fund Gintaras Rinkevicius.


The symbol of the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre Carmen by Georges Bizet will be performed on 8 December. The performance will be conducted by Honored Artist of Russia Felix Korobov. It was the first opera staged at the Belarusian theatre back in 1933. The performance will feature prima donna of the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre Larisa Andreyeva, leading singer of the Mariinsky Theatre Akhmed Agadi and leading singer of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia Vladislav Sulimsky.

On 9 December, the Belarusian audience will see the opera Tosca, directed by Mikhail Pandzavidze. The leading parts are played by the Honored Artist of Belarus Nina Sharubina, People's Artist of Belarus Sergei Frankovsky, and People's Artist of Belarus Vladimir Petrov.

The Latvian National Opera will present a stage production of LaTraviata by Giuseppe Verdi on 10 December. The scene of the opera is laid in the 1950s. The major character Violetta Valery is not a dying, suffering woman, but an energetic, life-loving person.

On 11 December the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow will present its interpretation of Gioachino Rossini's Barber of Seville.

The festival will be wrapped up with a gala concert with the participation of world opera stars on 12 December. Partaking in the concert will be USSR People's Artist Zurab Sotkilava (Russia), People's Artist of Russia Ludmila Shemchuk, Jorge Perdigon (Spain), prize-holder of the international contests Vladislav Sulimski (Russia), People's Artist of Uzbekistan Avaz Radzabov, People's Artists of Belarus Sergei Frankovsky and Vladimir Petrov, others.

The forum is founded by the Minsk City Executive Committee, the Culture Ministry of Belarus and the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus.
