International Cold Chain Logistics

Food and pharmaceutical goods can be damaged during their transportation by temperature variations

. However, cold chain transportation logistics has become increasingly refined over time. Globalization has made the distance between regions much closer, but public authorities across different countries require different levels of product safety in the cold chain.

Europeean Union

Europe set up policies to enhance temperature control and improve the quality and safety of products as well as the performance of equipment in the cold chain.

The public authorities of many countries have established rules and regulations with a view to control temperatures. These rules and regulations are generally established at several levels:

the products with the highest risk must be maintained in defined temperature ranges;

the temperature in the cold rooms and the carriage equipment must be recorded;

For certain types of equipment, refrigeration performance levels must be complied with and checked by independent laboratories.

United States

In the U.S., shipment of temperature sensitive articles is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, US Pharmacopoeia Convention, Parenteral Drug Association. But, you can find additional information regarding the U.S. food legislation in a previous article Ive written - Recent News Regarding Food Safety Guidelines.

Australia & Canada

In 2001, the Institute of Food Technologists found that Australia and Canada have terms and requirements similar to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Code.

China

In China, cold chain industry standards are still in their beginnings and there is no clear timetable on when they will be published. The lack of national standards poses a major barrier to the development of the cold chain industry.

South Africa

In South Africa, the demand from importing countries to guarantee food safety resulted in the creation of the Perishable Products Export Control Act. The PPECB Act and Regulations require that all cold stores used for the export of perishable products to be registered and annually re-inspected. South Africas trade legislation is increasingly demanding on food safety and traceability.

The cold chain plays a fundamental role in the modern global trade. It is obvious that more and more countries will adopt regulations that impose temperatures control and traceability during the cold chain to ensure product quality and food.
