International volunteers have contributed a lot in the development of Nepal

. Ever since the first volunteers started arriving more than 2 decades back, many other projects, especially the orphanages of Nepal have been supported through volunteers" work and donations many of them have provided. The children, who have grown up with volunteers around them, being helped, taught, loved and cared by them, talk of how lucky they were to have received such support. Without volunteers help, they would have ended up destitute as orphanages would have to shut down.

There is very little help from the government of Nepal for the orphanages of Nepal. Most orphanages are resource poor and understaffed. They are often opened by groups of social workers with the aim of providing their servicing and securing funding from abroad to run the orphanage. Many of the orphanages run into trouble after renting a property to house orphaned children as securing funds isn"t as easy as they"d envisaged. Still, many orphanages have survived because of volunteer organizations like RCDP that have provided orphanages volunteers to look after their children.

Volunteers at first are often shocked at seeing the living conditions inside orphanages. The children sleep in cramped rooms, often at least 2 children in a single bed, there isn"t place for them to study and play, and their meal doesn"t contain all the vitamins and minerals required by growing children of 7 to 15. Despite this, many volunteers have labored hard to help the children. They"ve taught the children English, cared for them by washing their clothes, keeping them tidy, playing with them, teaching them songs and plays and sometimes even buying them meals. Because of these activities, the children have grown up feeling loved and cared. They become confident also and many of their performances in schools have also increased. Many volunteers, seeing the plight of the children, have also raised funds. The success of volunteers" contribution in orphanages is one of many examples in Nepal.

Volunteers have also taught in rural and underfunded schools of Nepal, where children from poor families study, they"ve worked in medical projects treating desperately poor children, planted trees and saved forest covers from dwindling, and also constructed buildings for schools and orphanages through their sheer hard work. In many villages of Nepal, examples abound of generous work volunteers have provided in Nepal.

In return, volunteers in Nepal have experienced warm and welcoming environments and outpouring of appreciation of their work. While volunteering, they have lived with Nepalese host family and enjoy the culture and customs of Nepal who treat any guests as Gods. Volunteers have also escaped to the mountains of Nepal by trekking through well known tracks and seen Nepal in all its glorious. The terrain, valleys, rivers and awe-inspiring Himalayas have inspired many volunteers to return again, time after time, or to never forget Nepal. Because of this, perhaps Nepal is an ideal destination to volunteer.
