Numerous websites now offer web vouchers in the form of a "daily deal" for their visitors, taking the online commerce industry and making it a communal shopping environment.

Most of these "daily deal" voucher websites operate on a grassroots level, highlighting local businesses that have agreed to offer their products or services at a discount if enough of the vouchers are purchased in advance. Take, for example, a local coffee shop that wants to generate more traffic. By partnering with one of these voucher websites, they can offer ten dollars worth of food or drink in the form of a five-dollar prepaid coupon. Visitors (usually registered members of the website) see the offer via a "daily deal" and decide whether or not the offer is valuable enough to make the purchase.

A tipping point is often set by the websites to achieve a particular amount of traffic -- the deal is only available if a certain number of coupons are sold. If the threshold is not reached by day's end, the "daily deal" is canceled and those customers who expressed interest in the offer are not charged. Occasionally some fine print is associated with the coupon, such as an expiration date or excluded merchandise, but normally the deals are straightforward offers intended to generate new business.
