I'm often surprised how many home business owners start an online business with only a vague idea of what they are looking to achieve

. This is why so many only manage to get a few commission checks,, sometimes not even covering the amount they spent in the first place. Whatever the size of your business, you need to decide upon a strategy right at the start.

An obvious way to come up with a strategy is to study what other successful marketers have been doing recently. Find out who the key influencers are, buy their products and study their methods. If your budget allows, buy the high-end products, that's usually where the real secrets get revealed, and it will give you a great springboard to get in contact with that person and ask them for guidance.

There are many ways to be successful, and it might be tempting to try out each of these methods on a casual basis, this isn't what you could term a 'strategy.'

But of course you need to get started. If you're an internet marketer, of course you'll go right away in creating an online brand and work your way up that way. If you're a network marketer, you have the option of working traditionally. Take time to think what you really want to achieve. Transitioning online does not happen overnight.


If you decide to go down the online route, and are new to the internet, it's advisable to learn the basics of one element first, for example Facebook, or Twitter, before moving on to master something new.

Within a few weeks, you should have a few strings to your bow and will have a clearer picture of the whole online scene and start to get some feedback from your efforts.

Give it a month or so, then turn back and look at what you've achieved. Are you starting to get market feedback ? If not, have you applied what you've learned and been consistent enough ?

As you make yourself ready to decide upon your marketing strategy, ask yourself the following questions:

What am I seeking to achieve short term, medium term and long term? It may help to think of these periods of time as 90 days, six months and the next ten years.

Get yourself some high quality training material from your mentor, or others you admire and are known for having recently obtained results.

Write down your strategy. Make sure you do it in writing. Use words or drawings, whatever works for you, but come up with a clear business plan. What you're going to do, and when, to achieve what results with what budget. Think it over for a few days, refine it. When you've got a plan you're comfortable with, stick with it.

When launching a new campaign, ask yourself: Who am I trying to reach through my campaign? A campaign can be very specifically targeted or, at the other end of the scale, a campaign of general awareness about you and/or your business.


How am I going to get my message across? You may have a unique skillet and previous experience. All of these attributes combine to form your unique brand.

How do I know how to identify my brand? The quickest way to establish your brand values is by asking yourself: what do I want people to think when they encounter my marketing? You might want to promote trust, honesty, integrity, confidence and individualism, for example. These form part of your brand values - and it can help to keep them somewhere near your computer screen to remind you of them at all times.

As you get started implementing your strategy, decide in advance when the review points will be, so you can distance yourself from the business and make adjustments as required.
